How to convert a Java world to Bedrock

Chunker is a free world converter from Hive Games. It turns a Java world into a Bedrock world, blocks and all. We use it to make the Bedrock copy of every map we sell.

By the Chunkwright team. Updated 10 October 2026. Java worlds from 1.8 to current, to current Bedrock. Our command line run: Chunker CLI 1.20.0, Java 1.21.11 world to Bedrock 1.21.130.

Step by step

  1. Find the Java world

Single player worlds are in .minecraft/saves. The world is the folder with level.dat in it. Close Minecraft first so the world is fully saved.

  2. Convert it on the web

Open Chunker at chunker.app, choose the world folder (or a zip of it), pick Bedrock and the version you play, and start the conversion. Download the result when it is done. Big worlds take longer.

  3. Or convert it on your own PC

Chunker also comes as a command line jar that runs on your machine, with no upload. This is the exact command we use. It needs Java installed.

    java -Xmx4G -jar chunker-cli-1.20.0.jar -i "My World" -f BEDROCK_R21_130 -o "My World Bedrock"

-i is the Java world folder, -o the output folder, -f the Bedrock version. A wrong -f value prints the full list of versions. Our test worlds converted in one to two seconds.

  4. Make a .mcworld file

If you have a folder, zip what is inside it, so level.dat and the db folder sit at the top of the zip. Then rename the .zip to .mcworld.

  5. Import it into Bedrock

On Windows, double click the .mcworld and Minecraft opens and imports it. On Android and iPhone, open the file and choose Minecraft. The world then shows up in your worlds list.

What does not carry over

  • Java datapacks, plugins and mods. Bedrock uses add-ons instead.
  • Command blocks may need their commands fixed, because some command syntax differs between the editions.
  • A few Java blocks and entities have no Bedrock match, so check signs, banners, item frames and heads after converting.

Walk the world once in Bedrock before you share it. In our test, blocks, fences, stairs and lanterns all came out right.

Going the other way

Chunker converts Bedrock to Java too. Pick a Java version as the output. It can also move a Java world to an older Java version, which drops blocks that version does not have.

Questions

Can you convert a Java world to Bedrock?

Yes. Chunker, a free tool from Hive Games, converts Java worlds to Bedrock and back, on the web or with a command line jar.

Is Chunker free?

Yes. The web version and the command line version are both free.

How do I open a .mcworld file?

On Windows, double click it. On a phone, open it and choose Minecraft. It imports into your worlds list.

Will my redstone and command blocks work after converting?

Simple redstone usually does. Command blocks may need fixes because Bedrock commands differ. Datapacks do not carry over.

From our studio

Every map pack we sell already has the Bedrock .mcworld next to the Java world and the .schem, converted this way. Custom builds can be delivered for Bedrock on request.
